Cladding Restoration

THE BUILDING ENVELOPE IS EVERYTHING THAT SEPARATES THE INDOOR ENVIRONMENT FROM THE OUTDOOR ENVIRONMENT. THE SYSTEM YOU USE IS VITAL TO THE BUILDING’S PERFORMANCE.

In northern climates, temperature ranges as great as +30° C in the summer and -30° C in the winter offer the climate differential of the arctic to that of the tropics.  We rely on the building envelope to keep us both warm and dry through those massive temperature fluctuations

Further complicating matters is the fact that the building envelope is not one thing or another. It is an assembly of many different parts, all of which must work together to stand against all weather eventualities.

From gleaming high-rise glass towers to low-rise brick and stucco buildings to single family residences with siding, the building envelope must:

  • Shed water from rain or snow
  • Drain water from rain, snow or condensation
  • Prevent air-leakage
  • Prevent vapour leakage
  • Insulate
  • Look aesthetically pleasing on both the interior and exterior sides

Cladding, that portion of the exterior wall that acts essentially as a coat, is also one of the major architectural features of a building. The materials, texture and colour present one of the largest impressions of the building and whether this cladding has experienced failure or simply provides an image of the building that is trapped in a “time zone” of a bygone era, Cladding Restoration is a major opportunity to improve the performance of your building.

Aside from the exterior walls of a building being the largest source for heat loss and solar heat gain, they also represent one of the largest areas for air leakage and water leakage. Depending on the state of your site’s envelope, its position within the life-cycle, the degree of issues present or simply the desire to take an old and tired looking façade and renewing the building’s presentation, the decision to either restore or replace can have significant impacts on both property value and occupant comfort.

Within Entuitive, we have conducted projects as wide ranging as single family residences to high-rise buildings in both restoration and recladding.

For commercial buildings typically located in densely populated urban area where real estate is precious, the opportunity to renew a building through re-cladding presents owners with the opportunity to regain the status of their building as a Class A space with relatively minimal investment when evaluated against other options.

We employ teams of experienced building science and building envelope practitioners who combine years of experience with the latest technological tools to assess conditions and opportunities to restore or renew the cladding of your building.
