Located in Toronto’s South Core district, 16 York is a 32-storey commercial development by Cadillac Fairview. The tower has been designed to be architecturally integrated with the Ïce complex to the south. Extending the Ïce towers’ shared tabletop podium to the north, 16 York will meet the street level with a tall atrium lobby and retail spaces.
Below grade, a new connection to PATH will be extended via Maple Leaf Square and through to Union Station. Three underground parking levels are under construction with a total of 289 spaces.
Entuitive was retained by Cadillac Fairview to serve as the Structural Engineering Consultant.
Challenge: The big architectural move for the building consists of a 1.5-metre side shift of the building at the twenty-second floor in two directions.
Solution: We were successful in avoiding transfer girders by developing a column shift transfer. This allowed the design to maintain the floor-to-floor heights as well as the column position at the perimeter of the building. On one side of the building the column transfer permits the cantilevering to occur and on the opposite the column transfer permits the span condition to be resolved.
