At 160 metres tall, 20 Fenchurch consists of a two-storey lobby and podium, 31 floors of commercial office space, and the Sky Garden at the top. The design includes deep, continuous vertical fins on the east and west elevations that carry up and over the top of the building. All façades “swing out” as they rise up. These distinctive vertical fins, sitting proud of the curtain wall surface, splay as the building rises, further accentuating the wider top of the building.
Members of Entuitive’s building envelope team helped to realize the design and provided commercial management for the structural and building envelope design services. developing the structural system of a curving structure of complex geometry.
A member of Entuitive’s structural engineering team, acting as project principal, developed the structural system of a curving structure with complex geometry. Using numerous programs to optimize the structure, various programs and scripts were developed to assist in the complex process.
Challenge: In plan and elevation, the façade is concave on the north and south, and convex on the east and west. This created a complexity in what materials to use for the glazing assembly and exterior fin, as well as how to create repetition, to make the façade commercially viable.
Solution: Working closely with the architectural team, we executed parametric modeling to rationalize the façade to identify areas of unique shape, in an effort to identify opportunities for repetition through rationalization and/or minute adjustments in the plane of the wall. We also assisted the design team in evaluating multiple materials and systems that could be used in the façade design, to maximize the performance advantages of aluminum and steel as support for the glazing systems to bring the overall design to fruition.
