The York University Athletics Stadium is a world-class track and field venue that was built for the Pan American Games, the world’s third largest international multi-sport games.
The open stadium is located on York University’s Keele campus. During the Games, the new stadium hosted track and field events and accommodated a seating capacity of 12,500 seats. After the Games, the stadium became a facility for the York University athletic team to use for training and special track and field events.
In addition, the long jump pits can be moved outside of the track ring to accommodate the use of the natural turf infill as a rugby pitch. The design of the stadium incorporated a high degree of flexibility to accommodate an easy transition from the Pan Am Games program to a legacy facility that is an integrated part of York University and the surrounding community.
Challenge: Accounting for semi-heated spaces and year-round use, the design of the building envelope had to consider dynamic use conditions, such as heated or unheated spaces at various times during the year, which led to challenges on how to properly configure the wall assembly.
Solution: By performing thermal and dewpoint analysis, the operating conditions were mapped out and adverse conditions were identified, ultimately affecting material selection and wall design.
