Spring 2007 saw Toronto soccer fans raucously welcome the newly-minted professional soccer team, Toronto FC, to its freshly built home stadium, the 20,000-seat BMO Field. Owned and operated by Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment and situated on Toronto’s CNE grounds, the stadium hosts major entertainment as well as sporting events.
A main public concourse provides access to the seating bowl, private suites, and below-grade dressing rooms. A media gondola is located on the upper level with half of the seating and amenities sitting in the west main grandstand.
The principals of Entuitive participated in the design of a pre-engineered seating system where structural steel framing support aluminum planks as well as the seats, stairs and railings. The entire seating system is supported on cast-in-place concrete foundations, and slabs and beams in the dressing room area.
Challenge: The client needed to control costs and open the facility in time for the start of Toronto FC’s inaugural season.
Solution: The pre-engineered seating system we helped to select saved time, as did our collaboration with the contractor to choose the “cut-off” between cast-in-place concrete, which was built quickly; and structural steel, which would arrive later. The highly economical building cost $3,000 per seat to build.
