Part of the new 19 km Eglinton Crosstown LRT (ECLRT) line, Eglinton West (Allen) Station is a critical interchange connecting the new LRT line with the existing Spadina subway line.
The interchange includes a new 137 metre, three-level, below grade LRT station. The new LRT platform is located on the lowest level, crossing below the existing Spadina subway running structure. Stairs and elevators provide passenger access to the lower concourse level, which connects to the subway platforms via new tunnels. A smaller upper concourse level connects to the east and west entrances which provide access to street level.
Challenge: The Toronto Transit Commission and Metrolinx required minimal disruption to subway operations during construction of this new station. This posed a significant challenge for the design team, as the new LRT station extends below the existing operating subway line.
Solution: Complex staged underpinning was designed to support the underside of the existing subway structure and allow for construction of the LRT structure underneath, while ensuring uninterrupted subway service up above. Additional underpinning supports the existing subway station structure to allow construction of new pedestrian access tunnel connections to the subway platforms. Other design challenges included the presence of groundwater and protection of adjacent buildings and utilities during excavation and construction.
