Turning a former Sears building into its lavish new 151,000 ft2 Calgary flagship store, luxury retailer Holt Renfrew made the store its own by adding distinctive modern design elements to the structure.
A dramatic entrance façade welcomes visitors from within Calgary’s CORE mall and a pair of 70-ft tall sculptural ‘lanterns’ marking the building’s corners, provide the store with its exterior identity. Floor openings within the store were modified to create a dynamic four-level atrium that extends from the ground level to the underside of the mall’s expansive new glass roof.
Exterior street-level glazing and cladding was replaced to allow for clear views into the store while also raising the quality of the envelope to suit the store.
Challenge: Illuminated lanterns define the exterior entrance from street level, creating a dramatic night-time view. These lanterns required a minimalist structural system that reduced shadowing from backlights and allowed for fine-tuned adjustments to lantern panels.
Solution: We used a tension system to hang slender structural supports from a cantilevered beam system at the roof level.
