The Inglewood Bird Sanctuary is located in the east of downtown Calgary, in the historic Inglewood industrial district. Due to increased user demand and the popularity of environmental education programs within the city, the existing space at the Nature Centre required expansion to better serve and support Environmental Education (EE) and to meet the demand for more programmable space.
Entuitive was retained for the construction of a 550 – 700 ft² outdoor shelter with the objective of being a flexible, accessible space, with intended use for three seasons of the year. The building materials and design are intended to pay tribute to the historic Colonel Walker’s Sawmill once located at this site.
Challenge 1: Achieving a modern architectural appeal while paying homage to site history.
Solution 1: While the architectural form is modern, Sawn Douglas Fir Timber was selected as the structural material in order to pay respect to the historic sawmill that previously occupied this site.
Challenge 2: Achieving structural stability while maintaining the feel of a structure-free throughfare.
Solution 2: Introduction of steel and timber moment frames to eliminate the need for cross bracing.
