Located adjacent to the escarpment and featuring an impressive, fully glazed main entrance, the Juravinski Hospital – formerly Henderson General Hospital – provides acute inpatient and diagnostic services, as well as educational resources to support the patients of the nearby Juravinski Cancer Centre.
The new facility includes a state-of-the-art emergency department, surgical suite with nine operating rooms, diagnostic imaging, and hematology inpatient and intensive care units. The hospital also offers a wide range of services associated with Juravinski’s highly regarded Orthopedic program, and an enhanced oncology inpatient unit along with ambulatory services to support cancer care patients.
Challenge: It was necessary to locate the new building immediately adjacent to the existing edge of a 10 metre high, vertical rock cut.
Solution: A cantilevered raft foundation was designed to support the outer edge of the building. Compressible material was placed beneath a portion of the footing to avoid loading the unstable area along the edge of the rock face.
