Structural Engineering Consultant and Building Envelope Consultant for Block C of the CityCenter development
Located on famous Las Vegas Boulevard, the $9 billion CityCenter is a 17 million square foot multi-use development that features iconic, world-class architecture – a contemporary, unique departure from the themed buildings that previously defined the strip.
CityCenter, developed in Blocks A, B and C, contains world-class hotels, residences, retail units, and entertainment facilities. Structural design was completed for buildings in Block C, which includes the Mandarin Oriental Hotel and Residences (392 hotel units, 225 residential units), the 37 storey Veer Tower Condominiums – with its two towers at a five degree slant away from the vertical – and The Crystals, a 500,000 square foot retail complex. Block C features building design by several world-renowned, international architects, including Murphy John, KPF, Daniel Libeskind Architects and Foster & Partners.
Challenge: To address the unique architectural and structural requirements of each of the three buildings: the Mandarin Oriental Hotel and Residences, the Veer Tower Condominiums, and The Crystals complex.
Solution: At the Mandarin Oriental Hotel and Residences, structural solutions were proposed to achieve open hotel lobby spaces and smooth transitions between hotel and condominium floor occupancies. At the Veer Tower Condominiums, lateral deflection and creep were addressed using complex analysis, and a unique structural support system was design to realize the multi-faceted, quartz crystal form of The Crystals.
