The Student Recreation Centre, a contemporary athletic facility for students and staff, was part of the Mohawk College Fennel Campus Renewal Master Plan. Completed in 2013, the Recreation Centre enhances student life and enables student interaction by providing communal spaces where students can gather, socialize, and share ideas.
The new building features a gym, fitness areas, running track, general and multi-purpose spaces, and associated amenities.
Entuitive designed exposed structural steel trusses for the bridge that links the Recreation Centre to the existing Mohawk Student Centre. We chose hollow-structural steel sections because they offer a visually exciting appearance and result in clean connections for the steel framing on the bridge between the two buildings. Instead of using bolts, the members were fully welded to each other to achieve the desired look of simple, clean connections.
Challenge: The project plan called for minimization of finishes applied as part of a constrained budget and a reduced construction schedule.
Solution: Entuitive minimized the need for finishes by using the structure of the building as its architecture. We designed architecturally exposed steel bracing in the gym using Macalloy tension rods. We also designed exposed, reinforced concrete beams that included a six-metre cantilever at one end. These beams are deeper at the columns and thinner in between, adding an elegant touch to the building.
