The iconic One Canada Square stands 50-storeys high, one of the tallest buildings in the United Kingdom. Its unique pyramid pinnacle marks its location at the heart of Canary Wharf, a new commercial district in East London, north of the River Thames.
With a total floor area of 1.2 Million square feet, the building is primarily used for offices with retail units on the ground floor.
The structure consists of a steel framed core and perimeter steel tube consisting of deep steel beams and columns spaced at 3m centres. Lateral loads are resisted by the perimeter steel tube above the second floor level and by the braced steel core below the second floor level. The floors consist of concrete slabs on composite steel deck.
Challenge: An aggressive construction schedule required construction to start prior to the completion of the structural design.
Solution: The structural steel was tendered based on preliminary design drawings and a defined scope of work, based on experience with similar prior projects.
