Structural Engineering and Building Envelope Consultant
Located in Markham, outside of Toronto, and set on a lot that slopes back dramatically towards the Don River, this three-storey custom home features stunning views into the ravine from a contemporary interior. All systems are designed to allow for passive heating and cooling, and the building features a high performance building envelope. The exposed, cast-in-place concrete structure’s thermal mass helps manage temperature extremes and creates a serene and secure environment for the family.
Due to the significant slope of the lot and its features, the structural design was fairly complex and involved long spans and reinforced concrete and structural steel – much of which was architecturally exposed. An 8-foot high retaining wall was constructed to support an elevated infinity pool. The home, currently under construction, is expected to be completed later this year.
Challenge: Balancing requests for changes in the design from the client with a complex structural design.
Solution: Entuitive collaborated closely with the architect and the client to address frequent changes. Our objective was to ensure that the integrity of the structural and envelope solution remained intact while also supporting the client and architect’s design vision. Flexibility in our approach combined with our extensive experience working with difficult sites allowed our team to quickly respond to changes with creative and pragmatic solutions.
