The Rotary Flames House is a children’s hospice located next door to the Alberta Children’s Hospital. Completed in 2009, it was the first of its kind in Alberta and one of only six in Canada.
The vision behind the design was to create a welcoming home-like environment focused on offering care, comfort and support for the whole family. The colourful exterior helps Rotary Flames House fall in line with the neighbouring children’s hospital, while the brick façade offers a home-like touch.
To realize the vision, we designed spaces that mirrored our favourite spaces in family homes, such as dens, dress-up rooms, outdoor forts, decks, gardens and video game rooms. Everything is wheelchair-accessible, including childrens’ rooms, family suites, the kitchen, therapy rooms and the two-level outdoor play fort.
Challenge: Create a structure that meets the needs of a palliative care centre while appearing, structurally, like a home inside and out.
Solution: Rotary House was built using concrete up to the second floor. Above that, timber frame construction leads up to a pitched roof.
