This £6 million project will convert the 200 hectare Walthamstow Reservoir site into an urban nature reserve. Recently securing a £4.4m Heritage Lottery Fund grant, the project will carefully repair and reuse the site’s existing architecture. The works include the refurbishment of two historic buildings: the Grade II listed Coppermill Tower and the locally listed Marine Engine House, which is being converted into a visitor centre.
Entuitive designed an exposed-steel staircase, lift and viewing platform for the listed Coppermill Tower, a Victorian Italianate chimney added to the mill building in 1864. Sensitive to the historical nature of the building, Entuitive designed these elements to sympathetically integrate into the existing structure, and our approach limited the interface to the existing structure to a small number of careful connections while the stair itself is assembled from a kit of parts inside the tower with no onsite welding. Entuitive also designed all steel connections for this system, ensuring that the solution not only respected the integrity of the existing structure but also that a harmonious aesthetic was achieved.
Entuitive have also been enlisted to assist the architects in designing a new-build volunteer hub at a prominent location near the entrance to the site. Currently being planned to incorporate cross-laminated timber construction, the building will have strong sustainability credentials while also meeting a relatively low budget and short construction schedule. The building will provide flexible space for Natural England and other charities working at the site.
