New Mackenzie Vaughan Hospital Project Awarded
Building Care for a Community
Infrastructure Ontario and Mackenzie Health have awarded the contract to design, build, finance and maintain the new Mackenzie Vaughan Hospital to Plenary Health – a consortium that includes Plenary Group (Canada) Ltd., PCL Constructors Canada Inc. and Stantec Architecture Ltd. We’re excited to be part of this project as the structural engineering consultant on the team.
As the first new hospital to be built in the York Region in 30 years, the project will be a significant benefit to the community in Vaughan. During construction, the hospital will employ 1,000 construction workers with more than 600 workers on the site daily at its peak. When complete, the project will bring much-needed healthcare services to the region. The 1.2 million square foot complex will have capacity for 75,000 annual emergency visits and employ 1,800 full-time healthcare workers.
The project has a goal of achieving LEED® Silver certification, focusing on sustainable design and construction. The contract is valued at approximately $1.3 billion which reflects the payments made during construction, the substantial completion payment and the monthly service payments before inflation adjustments. This figure does not reflect the total project cost.
The hospital will be a place for state-of-the-art healthcare. The new facility will include an emergency department designed for the needs of today’s patients, modern surgical services and operating rooms, advanced diagnostic imaging, specialized ambulatory clinics and intensive care beds, and acute-care patient rooms for infection prevention and control. It will also be the first hospital in Canada to feature fully-integrated smart technology with systems and medical devices that speak directly to one another to maximize information exchange.
“We’re really excited to be part of such an important project that will positively impact so many people,” said Sean Smith, Principal at Entuitive. “With our strong healthcare portfolio and focus on collaboration, our Healthcare team is very experienced in delivering innovative and efficient design solutions that help drive the successful delivery of these complex infrastructure projects.”
This project adds to Entuitive’s extensive healthcare experience. From Peel Memorial Centre for Integrated Health and Wellness completed this year to Saskatchewan Hospital North Battleford and the Mount Sinai Phase III revitalization, both under construction, Entuitive is a key part of several large healthcare facilities across Canada. Projects like Eglinton Crosstown LRT, Seneca College King Campus Expansion, Red Deer Arena Replacement and Humber College Learning Resource Commons are other large projects where we are applying our skills and deep understanding of the P3 and design-build process. When it comes to a major infrastructure project like a new hospital, it’s our dedication to the lasting, positive impact on a community that keeps the good ideas flowing and inspires us to design smarter.
