Integrating Fire as a Load Case with BIM

In collaboration with Carleton University’s John Gales, Entuitive’s Matthew Smith wrote a feature for the Fall 2016 edition of Advantage Steel, a publication by the Canadian Institute of Steel Construction.

The drive for high performance in the built environment is changing the rules. The consideration of fire to the structural performance of buildings has seen more inclusion in the design process over the past several years. There has been a recent shift towards including fire as a load case on structures to quantify the performance under fire scenarios and design our buildings accordingly. The article discusses this trend along with how BIM can be utilized for fire engineering considerations.

This article reflects part of our ongoing, collaborative work and research to further the field and our own practice in structural fire engineering with a focus on performance-based solutions.
