Structural Testing of All-Timber Edge Connections

Mass timber is often proposed as an alternative to conventional steel and concrete construction, and these products have the potential to change our built environment.

Connections for mass timber elements are predominantly formed from steel screws and plates. However, CLT metal connections present several issues. An innovation that may resolve some of these issues is the development of all timber connections, pre-cut into the edges of structural elements. Such a strategy could allow for the integration of a connection manufacturing process within the existing framework of the offsite mass timber production using computer numerical control (CNC) cutting.

This paper presents an investigative study into a prototype design for an all timber pre-cut
connection.
