123 Shirland Road is a single-storey, above ground, post-war building with a single basement that will be demolished to build a new, mixed-use residential complex with one level of basement, four levels of residential flats, and one level of commercial space at grade.

Entuitive was retained as the Structural Engineering Consultant and also provided an Embodied Carbon Lifecycle Assessment to compare a conventional design scheme to an innovative approach with less global warming potential.

The LCA examined the Product Stage, or upfront emissions, of a typical Reinforced Concrete Frame scheme compared to a DELTABEAM® and Hollowcore Slab scheme to determine which offered a lower carbon and more sustainable option in terms of embodied carbon. Material quantities for the building were measured off planning design drawings and the embodied carbon impacts were calculated using the OneClickLCA software, ensuring the calculations were in line with recognized standards.

The results of the Product Stage LCA were projected over the life of the building, based on industry knowledge and benchmarking studies, which allowed the team to compare the anticipated total embodied carbon with industry standards and best practices.

Challenge

Creating a single-storey basement in between traditional Victorian buildings and a busy road on a tight sight. Another challenge is removal of stiffener buttressing walls to the adjacent row of terraces.    

Solution

Contiguous piles retaining wall was utilised along the street to retain the busy road. Mass concrete underpinning and progressive construction sequence in a hit and miss manner was suggeted for the excavation adjacent to the existing buildings.
