Originally constructed in 1982, the BMO Centre is Calgary’s main venue for consumer and trade shows, special events, meetings, and conferences.

Despite a few expansions over the past two decades, the current size and state of the BMO Centre is inadequate to meet existing trade and consumer show demands.

As part of the Rivers District Master Plan, the BMO Centre is undergoing a major expansion that will more than double its floor space to nearly one million square feet, making it the largest conference facility in Western Canada once complete. The expansion will also add more amenities, loading and storage areas, and modernize the audiovisual/technology infrastructure.

The project is a key component of the Rivers District Revitalization Plan and its ambition to create sustainable development inside the core and inject energy into the community. Entuitive is providing building envelope consulting and building envelope commissioning services for this project, which will be a major catalyst for Alberta’s economic diversity, trade and tourism.

Challenge

Accommodating deflection in the cladding at the ballroom.

Solution

Through extensive design meetings, we have worked with the Architect and Structural design teams to develop a curtainwall system surrounded by opaque cladding systems able to withstand the deflection variations while maintaining aesthetic requirements.

Challenge

Continuity of expansion joints.

Solution

We traced the entire perimeter of the new construction expansion joints and the tie in between new constriction and the existing building with Stantec, evaluating the individual expansion and tie in requirements for each individual area and developing the details to ensure full continuity of design.
