Solution
The use of prestressed, precast concrete I-girders with a conventional 225-mm-thick deck would not provide sufficient navigational clearance, so the superstructure for the new bridges will be comprised of 800-mm-deep prestressed, precast concrete box beams with a 150 mm concrete overlay. Also, the new bridge foundations utilize the abutments and pier caps as deep beams to span over the existing piled foundations of the Gardiner Expressway.
