Lake Shore Boulevard East is carried across the mouth of the Don River by a pair of two-span, slab-on-steel girder bridges.

These bridges require extending to increase the hydraulic capacity of the river to prevent upstream flooding. Entuitive was retained by Waterfront Toronto to design extensions of the existing bridges as part of the Port Lands Flood Protection and Enabling Infrastructure Project.

The new extensions will consist of two new spans, resulting in two, four-span bridges of 98 m total length each. The foundations for the extensions will integrate the existing foundations for the overhead Gardiner Expressway structure. The extensions are being designed such that they can eventually be connected by a median widening. They are also being designed so that they can be widened outwards. The extension of an adjacent single-track rail bridge is also part of the scope, as is the design of a new four-span hydro duct crossing.

Challenge

The new bridges must provide navigational clearance for barge traffic without raising the road grade. Conflicts between the new bridge foundations and the existing Gardiner Expressway foundations are also a challenge.

Solution

The use of prestressed, precast concrete I-girders with a conventional 225-mm-thick deck would not provide sufficient navigational clearance, so the superstructure for the new bridges will be comprised of 800-mm-deep prestressed, precast concrete box beams with a 150 mm concrete overlay. Also, the new bridge foundations utilize the abutments and pier caps as deep beams to span over the existing piled foundations of the Gardiner Expressway.
