Challenge
The interface of the parking structure required the introduction of retaining walls around parts of the perimeter and the potential need to install shoring. The challenge was to coordinate and advise the architectural team on strategies to minimize the cost of the structural requirements.
Solution
At the initial planning stage, the site restraints were clearly identified with regards to existing grades, parking structure appearance from adjacent streets, and vehicular in and out traffic movements. Working with the architectural team, Entuitive strategized to minimize the retaining walls to the north of the structure by providing options for retention structures and highlighting the cost of the systems. These were in turn used to develop a scheme that minimized the more expensive retention systems and focused on providing either parking at grade or with nominal concrete retaining walls and thus reaching a cost-effective solution.
