Challenge
Thermal challenges were identified at window spandrel panels at the podium roof parapet. These spandrel areas were located above the ceiling and received limited heating, increasing condensation risk.
Solution
After identifying the condensation risk, Entuitive proposed several solutions, including mechanically heating the zone immediately behind the spandrel area, adding heat trace cables to the mullions, and isolating the cold mullion areas from interior spaces using a “faux” stack joint. Working with the architect and mechanical engineer, heat trace cables were decided upon and these were set to energize when the window frames approached the interior dew point temperature. The end result was an energy-efficient means of managing condensation risk during cold weather.
