Entuitive Co-op Diaries: Nicole Shi

At Entuitive, we’re proud to support the next generation through our co-op program. Nicole Shi, a Construction Engineering co-op from the University of Waterloo, spent her term contributing to the Centre Block Rehabilitation project and other design work. From site visits to structural sketches, she gained hands-on experience and insight into the consultant’s role in the AEC industry. As an Architectural Engineering student, I’ve always been interested in the structural design aspects of building construction. Having just completed my second year at the University of Waterloo, I was eager to apply my growing knowledge in a practical setting during my next co-op term.

While exploring co-op opportunities through my university’s job board, I came across Entuitive. The construction engineering role immediately stood out as an excellent opportunity to put my learning into practice. I was impressed by Entuitive’s contribution to high-profile projects and resonated with the company’s values of inclusivity and sustainability.

My first day at Entuitive went by quickly and smoothly. I was warmly welcomed by a team of friendly coworkers—and some tasty sandwiches! Even though this was my fourth co-op, I still felt a bit nervous and anxious. Transitioning from being a full-time student to starting a new corporate job is always a big adjustment. Despite the nerves, I was excited to dive in and make the most of the next four months.

In my first few days, I was introduced to the Centre Block Rehabilitation project and the amazing team behind it. Centre Block is a large-scale, complex project, and Entuitive’s scope involves designing the temporary steel shoring system to support the historic building during excavation. Some of my tasks related to Centre Block included analyzing and monitoring site data, reviewing technical drawings, writing daily site reports, and updating documents and trackers. I also enjoyed going on site to learn about construction practices and machinery. Being able to see structural works in real life after learning about them in school is fascinating, not to mention seeing all of this happen inside the most monumental building in Canada!

Beyond Centre Block, I also worked on a variety of design tasks. These projects were both challenging and exciting, as I got to experience another side of what Entuitive does as engineering consultants. Designing structural elements and creating sketches for clients required me to apply my fundamental knowledge from school, making the real-world connection especially eye-opening.

For future co-op students, my biggest piece of advice is to make the most of your term. A co-op is a unique opportunity to experience the best parts of a job in a short period of time, so shape it into what you want it to be! Take advantage of the endless learning resources available through projects, coworkers, software tools, and networking events. Set clear learning goals for your term, and don’t be afraid to ask for support in achieving them!

Finally, I’d like to thank the Centre Block CA team—Matt Clemente, Veronica Morse, Calvin Sumajouw, Alex Telea, and Dana Bonner—for being a great group to work with and for making my experience at Entuitive both fun and memorable!
