Cities are growing faster than the infrastructure can support. We need commitment from the planning and design community to develop innovative solutions. Reclaiming urban land through rail overbuilds and rehabilitating deteriorating buildings are areas where a structural engineer with constructability expertise can significantly contribute to sustainable development.

Mike Hillcoat is an integral member of the Entuitive leadership team through his role as Principal.

Passionate about improving public infrastructure and engaging on projects that make positive contributions to renewing and rehabilitating our cities, Mike Hillcoat leads Entuitive’s existing buildings restoration service in New York.

Mike brings over 26 years of experience in construction contract administration and has served as a resident engineer on numerous projects across Canada and the US. A Certified Construction Contract Administrator, he has a deep understanding of the needs of all parties involved in the design and construction process.

Mike has extensive experience in the rehabilitation of existing residential buildings, adaptive re-use, building retrofits, and conversions. His experience with the restoration of residential buildings includes various properties for the Toronto Community Housing Corporation (TCHC), CityHousing Hamilton, and the City of Toronto Shelters unit. He understands the importance of developing designs that can be constructed with residents in-place and strives to minimize within existing occupied suites.

Mike acted as Principal in Charge for the largest residential Passive House existing building retrofit in North America at 500 MacNab, in Hamilton, Canada. This project won numerous awards including ENR’s Best Green Project for 2022, and a ULI award for Innovation in Attainable Housing. The project involved a deep energy retrofit of a 18-storey affordable seniors residence which achieved Passive House certification and reduced greenhouse gas emissions by 94%.
