The Park Hyatt Hotel in Toronto, which opened in 1936, underwent a significant renovation to modernize the luxury interior, as well as an exterior restoration to maintain the heritage of the hotel’s two towers.

Between 2017 and 2021 the project modernized the luxury hotel, condominium, restaurants, and amenities, and restored the exterior to maintain the heritage façade of the hotel’s two towers. The Park Hyatt straddles over an existing subway line that remained operational throughout construction. The project created 65 luxury rental apartments in the south tower, which is heritage designated, and a 219-room hotel in the north tower, as well as a rebuild of the pavilion between the two. The structure and masonry envelope of the south tower were restored to their original condition and appearance. In addition, the windows were replaced with soundproofing glass and thinner frames.

Entuitive acted as the Construction Engineering Consultant, assisting the Contractor with many construction phase design and analysis activities, including but not limited to:
  • Analyzing the behavior of the building with multiple internal floor structures removed,
  • Designing temporary bracing to accommodate selective demolition and reconstruction of structural elements,
  • Designing temporary shoring of existing foundation walls and internal columns to accommodate floor structure removal,
  • Reviewing loads imposed and design load spreading, cribbing structures to accommodate hoisting equipment and swing stages,
  • Assisting the contractor in developing demolition sequences to minimize costs,
  • Value engineering assistance on demolition and temporary shoring.
The renovated Park Hyatt opened to the public late in 2021.
