Bertram Pedestrian Overpass
This new pedestrian, cycling, and multi-use bridge creates a new safe, accessible, and reliable connection over Highway 97.
This new link connects the growing neighborhoods on the south side of Highway 97, integrated within a private development, to the downtown core and to the surrounding active transportation network.
The scope of work was to develop three (3) new concept options in response to the site context and based on the latest standards and regulations including CSA S7, to conduct a site analyses, undertake additional survey, identify project risks and constraints, and to develop a multiple account evaluation and facilitate the City of Kelowna and Interested Parties towards the selection of a preferred design option.
As the prime consultant leading a multi-disciplinary team, Entuitive prepared a detailed work plan, quality management plan, and risk assessment. At the end of the concept phase, our team delivered a final concept design report featuring the geometric constraints and possible solutions, multiple bridge alignment and concept options, accessibility considerations, aesthetic enhancements including lighting options, construction impact analyses, and cost estimates. Detailed design including construction documents were issued in January 2024 and construction administration was provided until June 2025 when the bridge was open to the public.
The Bertram Pedestrian Overpass was originally designed in 2021 by another firm which faced budget misalignment when it went to market. The City of Kelowna engaged Entuitive to undertake an independent design review where three concept options were explored to realign the structural system and scope to be more closely aligned with the City of Kelowna’s available budget. Following the acceptance of the Independent Design Review, the City of Kelowna re-issued the bridge to the market to be redesigned through a Progressive Design-Build (PDB) model.
