Chuck Bailey Recreation Centre Expansion

The Chuck Bailey Recreation Centre is located in the Whalley neighbourhood within Surrey’s City Centre core, near the Gateway Skytrain station.

The centre serves the surrounding community with recreational amenities.

Due to the current high demand for community services, the City of Surrey is undertaking an expansion to the existing facility.

The City has set high sustainability goals for the project, seeking Zero Carbon Building design strategies with potential for certification.

Entuitive is providing Sustainability and Building Envelope consulting services for the project, guiding the design to achieve a high-performance building with net zero emissions.

The expansion will offer a state-of-the-art community destination for local residents while incorporating the community’s values, needs, and identity into the design. The new expansion will provide additional recreation amenities, including a gymnasium, childcare space and outdoor playground area, multipurpose and maker spaces, fitness studio, and community kitchen.

KEY CONSIDERATIONS

Challenge One

Crime Prevention through Environmental Design (CPTED) requires visibility through most zones through glazing area. This will have implications for potential heat loss as well as thermal comfort.

Solution One

Conceptual massing and envelope optimization through parametric design. Thus, we were able to optimize opening placements as well as envelope-to-floor area ratio to limit heat loss and mitigate overheating risks particularly in the gym zone.
