NEW WESTMINSTER, BC
Royal Columbian Hospital Acute Care Tower (Phase 2)
Phase 2 involves the construction of a new 350-bed acute care tower on the north side of the existing hospital.
The tower includes acute and critical care units, an emergency department, an intervention floor, underground parking, and rooftop heliport.
The Royal Columbian Hospital Redevelopment Project is being undertaken to meet current standards for patient-centred care, infection control and safety, clinical best practices, workplace health, and sustainable energy and waste management, with flexibility for the future advancements.
This design-build project is targeting LEED® Gold Certification.
Entuitive was retained to join Ellis Don’s project team to provide building envelope consulting, and building envelope commissioning services, from early design, through construction and post-construction.

KEY CONSIDERATIONS
Challenge One
During the early design phases, we worked with the design team to develop wall assemblies that could meet the challenging thermal performance targets required to achieve the performance required according to the energy model, and meet the design intent of cladding and glazing system and alignment.
Solution One
Entuitive worked with Ellis Don, the envelope subcontractors, and HDR, to develop assemblies, and their connection to the structure and back-up walls, that could balance thermal performance and aesthetics, while minimizing thermal bridging. We performed computer based thermal analysis of the relevant systems to determine the ideal balance and verify performance at key details.
