The Bow 6th Avenue Grade Level Bridge
Expansion Joint Remediation
The Bow is one of the most notable buildings located in downtown Calgary.
The skyscraper reaches 58-storeys tall and contains a real estate area nearly two city blocks.
Original designs consisted of a second smaller tower located on the south side of 6th Avenue. The six-level underground parkade therefore extends from the north side of 6th Avenue to the south side.
The Bow is the only structure in downtown Calgary that utilizes a grade-level bridge along 6th Avenue to achieve a continuous parkade below the roadway.

KEY CONSIDERATIONS
Challenge One
Discontinuity in the expansion joint detailing along the bridge, both at vertical and horizontal components, became apparent shortly after construction. An ongoing issue of moisture seepage was the result. In addition, most of the expansion joint detailing was concealed.
Solution One
Thorough review of base building drawings combined with exploratory investigations enabled Entuitive to conclusively determine the seepage cause and point of origin. Solutions to mitigate the mositure seepage were then developed and implmented, which included repair of accessible expansion joint issues and introduction of a custom weeping system via drain pipes bored through the foundation walls at select locations.
