The Bow was the tallest building in Western Canada when it was built, and was ranked among the top 10 architectural projects in the world that year.

Entuitive was tasked with providing Primary Consulting and Structural Engineering services for the removal and replacement of the building maintenance unit on the roof of the building.

Entuitive’s solution was to extend columns up through the existing roof slab and erect support steel to support two new telescoping building maintenance units that could rotate 360 degrees.

The existing building maintenance unit was found to be under-designed and could not be used to replace glass on the south side of the building.

KEY CONSIDERATIONS

Challenge One

Working on the roof of a 58-storey, occupied office building and lifting materials from grade to the roof from the exterior of the building, without causing disruption to building occupants.

Solution One

Three cranes were temporarily erected. The first one was a scaffold crane that was brought in through the building and was erected directly on the roof. The second temporary crane was also brought up through the building and erected onto the existing roof top track. It was then used to lift the third, and largest, crane. The third crane was used to lift most materials on the exterior of the building from street level to the roof.
