Entuitive teamed with Parkin Architects and PCL Construction to design and construct an award-winning exhibit for CANstruction 2016- an event that brings together participants from architecture, design and engineering industries. Organized by the Society for Design Administration (SDA) with the assistance of the Consulting Engineers of Ontario (which represents 200 engineering companies) and the Design Exchange (a museum dedicated to design excellence and heritage), the event’s vision and purpose is to gather food donations and raise public awareness to fight hunger and poverty, placing the spotlight on design, architecture and engineering firms giving back to the communities that they helped to build.
Inspired by the team’s collaborative efforts the ‘Cup of Collaboration’ was selected as this year’s structure, meant to represent the importance of working together to raise awareness in fighting hunger and poverty. The team’s philosophy was based on how coffee can bring people together to spark conversation, community building, and focus. The simplicity of meeting over a cup of coffee to energize the bringing together of different ideas and perspectives to solve common problems.
“Our team was structured to mimic a true Design-Build partnership; Parkin Architects acted as the creative consultant for the big picture design, Entuitive provided a focus on structural engineering and advanced modelling, and PCL assisted with constructability recommendations and material procurement. The end result was a creative design that was composed of a 3-D component for the cup, handle, and saucer, as well as a 2-D visual component with the top foam pattern and the lipstick imprint on the top lip of the cup..” – Rob Volcko, Entuitive
The ‘Cup of Collaboration’ was awarded the Best Use of Labels award by this year’s judging panel for its “impressively executed coffee cup complete with latte art and a subtle lipstick stain”. The award is a testament to the team’s attention to detail and their collaborative efforts – from design conceptualization to modelling of build solutions and the construction of the exhibit. They had a lot of fun along the way supporting a great cause – over 60,000 pounds of food was donated to the Daily Bread Food Bank! Congratulations to the entire team!
