Brookfield Place Calgary Reaches Ground Floor

Written on Feb 23, 2015

On February 7th, the first section of the ground floor slab, which forms the east tower footprint of Brookfield Place Calgary, was successfully poured. The east tower is the first of two comprising the Brookfield Place Calgary development. The full-block commercial development is one of the best remaining undeveloped sites in Calgary’s downtown core, located between 1st & 2nd Streets and 6th & 7th Avenues SW.

With any high-rise project, reaching ground floor is the most critical milestone. The construction sequence established by the construction manager for above-grade structural work is one floor per week. Realization of the ground floor milestone now sets the mark for completion of structural work for the remaining portion of the tower. As this will become the tallest building in western Canada at 56-storeys and 247 metres tall, this milestone sets the stage for a true ‘rise to the top.’

Through the use of a self-climbing formwork system, the tower’s central concrete core has already started to take shape. The goal over the next several weeks will be to complete the ground floor of the tower footprint. Completion of this tower footprint establishes the date for which perimeter steel erection can begin. The structural steel, completing the approximate 1.6 million square feet of the tower will continue to chase the central core to the top.

This milestone is being celebrated by all on the project team and sets the stage for the completion date of the tower’s erection.
