Challenge
Among many unexpected existing conditions, one of the major challenges was moving eight columns throughout the main and second floors to allow for public corridors. The second floor and roof framing comprised a Gerber system, which made the column relocation more complicated. New openings for escalator, elevator, skylight, and mechanical components, as well as roof reinforcing for new roof top units and an extension of the fire exit underground tunnel provided additional challenges.
Solution
A great collaboration between consultants and the construction manager allowed the project to proceed without delay, despite the challenges. All details were developed based on constructibility concerns, providing enough flexibility to deal with unexpected site conditions.
